Georgia Licensing Requirements
The state requires accredited cosmetology training to meet licensing requirements, but students enjoy great freedom in how they complete their educations. The Georgia State Board of Cosmetology issues licenses to students meeting the course requirements and passing the state licensing examination. The follow course requirements comprise the prerequisites for taking the exam for different cosmetology specialties.
- Cosmetologist—1,500 hours of class study must be reinforced with 3,000 hours of apprenticeship.
- Hair Design—1,325 hours of class study must be reinforced with 2,650 hours of apprenticeship.
- Esthetician—1,000 hours of class study must be reinforced with 2,000 hours of apprenticeship.
- Nail Technician—525 hours of class study must be reinforced with 1,050 hours of apprenticeship.
- People who have qualified in other states or countries that extend reciprocity to Georgia’s cosmetology graduates and have similar requirements for qualifying may receive a license by paying the appropriate fee without taking the examination.
